
Shanghai Maritime University
Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), located in the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone, Pudong - the east area of Shanghai bordering on the Huangpu River and the East China Sea - is an institution of higher learning with 5 fields of study: engineering, management, economics, literature and the science of law. Special stress is placed on the disciplines of economic management and navigational technology. SMU is proud of having a full-time teaching staff of nearly 600, including more than 300 professors and associate professors. There are 12,400 students studying for their Bachelor's or Associate's degree, over 1,300 graduate students, the majority enrolled in one of the 25 Master's degree programmes but with significant numbers of students in the two Doctoral programmes. There are also over 3,000 students receiving adult education. SMU has students from overseas, too, and keeps maintains a programme of friendly visits, academic exchange and cooperative relations with institutions in the USA, the United Kingdom, Japan, Norway, Holland, and so on, in addition to various regional and international organizations.

SMU is strong in scientific research. It has undertaken many research projects from the state, the Ministry of Communications, the Shanghai Municipal Government, and ports and shipping companies. Some of them have won ministerial and state-level awards. Among them, "The Composite Training Simulation System" gained the Army's first prize of 2002; "The Research into the Network-based Engine Room Simulator for Container Ship" and "The 2500T/h large Unloading Ship Machine" earned the 2001 second prize of Shanghai's Scientific Progress; "A Study of the Competition and Cooperation among the Ports of Shanghai International Shipping Centre" was awarded the second prize on Shanghai Decision-Making Consultation. SMU has contributed significantly to the publication of the China Container Export Freight Index of the Shanghai Shipping Exchange - an index that has been praised as one of the three leading indexes of the World Shipping Market.

At SMU, there are over 100 research fellows and a number of part-time researchers. Annually, RMB£¤30,000,000 is spent on scientific research. SMU also publishes a number of The academic journals including The Journal of Shanghai Maritime University, Water Transport Management, Containerization, Computer-assisted Engineering, and Ocean Shipping Information.
