A Welcome Message

In today’s globalized economy, a nation’s development is very much dependent on its exchanges with the rest of the world. International shipping and logistics play a decisive role in facilitating these exchanges. In turn, competent professionals essential to manage an efficient and effective international transport and logistics system.

WMU has a mission to serve the global maritime community as the International Maritime Organization’s apex institution for high-level maritime education and research. Over the past two decades, WMU has developed into a centre of excellence for maritime education and research with modern, high-quality postgraduate programmes in the area of international transport and logistics. Such high standards are ensured by a strong faculty and our close partnerships with other established universities and with leading industrial organizations. In collaboration with Shanghai Maritime University, the WMU Shanghai programme reflects our mission, and responds to the demands of the world maritime community. Shanghai, one of the most dynamic business centres in the world, is a natural choice for our “out-reach” strategy. The World Maritime University and Shanghai Maritime University share a long and close cooperative relationship, having worked on a number of joint projects over the last 23 years. The immense success of the joint programme since March 2005 has taken this close relationship to new heights.

With the firm support from the educational authorities of both local and central government, the joint MSc Program in international Transport and Logistics between Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and World Maritime University (WMU) was successfully launched. This program, which embodies the wisdom of all people concerned from both universities, results from years' of close partnership between SMU and WMU. As the president of SMU, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to all the parties concerned for their support to this program and warm welcome all candidates both from domestic and overseas to join this program .

International transport is essential to the world economy and an important part of global logistics system. The Eastern Asia, with Shanghai in particular, is now playing more and more important role in global logistics, and therefore has attracted wide attention. It is generally expected to provide more competent and well-educated specialists who can contribute in this field, and it is the responsibility of all maritime universities to meet these expectations Shanghai Maritime University, characterized by maritime education and training, has spent much effort for the development of logistics-related subjects. I believe this program will strengthen the cooperation between the two universities and will be beneficial to the career of all the students. Meanwhile, we sincerely hope to establish and enhance co-operation and exchange with international maritime sectors through this program.
